Trumpeter Swans: Don’t Shoot Them

Only several dozen of these swans wintered in the region (the region being, approximately, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming) and for some reason they were almost all at this river in this year, and on this day, they were right there in view. There are a lot in the Mississippi Flyway these days. Three hunters have been charged.

That’s right, the overwhelming benefits to the environment and the economy are generated by non-consumptive uses of the refuges like wildlife photography, environmental education, wildlife observation and interpretation, not hunting and fishing. Note in this 2010 video, birders, birdwatching and kayakers are mentioned, not hunters.

Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.
