There is no shortage of Snow Geese, and no shortage of birds that feel right at home hanging out just a stone’s throw from you at the viewing platform. Snow, Ross’s, Greater White-fronted (all pictured above) and Cackling Geese can all be easily seen, very conveniently, at Colusa.

Only several dozen of these swans wintered in the region (the region being, approximately, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming) and for some reason they were almost all at this river in this year, and on this day, they were right there in view. There are a lot in the Mississippi Flyway these days. Canada has more than the US.

Western Tanager – Pretty unlikely but a guy can dream, right? Swallow-tailed Kite : I had a hard time deciding between this species and Mississippi Kite. I just have to be at the right place at the right time. I must stare at the ocean a lot. Sooty Shearwater – Ditto. Because a crane in Queens would be amazing.

Costa Rica is situated right between two oceans. The pair of seas are close enough for the occasional adventurous frigatebird to just soar way up and right over to the other salty basin. We had looks at Semiplumbeous Hawk , White-necked Puffbird , toucans, parrots, hundreds of migrating Mississippi Kites , and several other birdies.

The first sighting was of an individual seen and photographed right off the pier at Boynton Inlet on December 9, 2012. Although birds have been seen around the entire coast of the state, there are no reports west of Pensacola yet and may never happen due to the turbidity caused by the Mississippi River.

Swallow-tailed Kite : I had a hard time deciding between this species and Mississippi Kite. I just have to be at the right place at the right time. And then I went and saw six new species so I should have managed to predict at least half of them, right? So, why not go for the gusto and choose Swallow-tailed ?

We see a closer shot of the river itself, hawks flying across the span, and then we see that brown line again, close up, a wall of brown panels filling the right side of the screen, continuing into the distance, no end in sight, while a white pick-up truck drives parallel to it at the far left of the screen.

We don’t see the sky blue little bird of the canopy in droves but bird the right places in late August and early September and you have a pretty good chance of finding a few. On the raptor front, whirling flocks of Mississippi Kites , and massive groups of Broad-winged Hawks are passing through, and Ospreys are patrolling the beaches.

And, in a tree off to the right in that direction, I noticed a mass of stuff that resembled a Bald Eagle’s nest as much as any mass of stuff ever could, but of course, it was not a bald eagle nest. I live near a highway. All winter, I almost never went west on that road, only east, but a couple of times I did go west.
