Led by professionals who have experience with organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States, the group is definitely not new to the issues surrounding animals worldwide.

Because the Agriculture Department enforces the Animal Welfare Act, this authorizing bill deals with a broad range of subjects regarding the humane treatment of animals. These new penalties would give the law some much needed teeth. We hope Congress will vote to override the president’s veto.

We need not wait for the resolution of the big-picture theoretical debates to come together to ensure that all animals receive more decent and humane treatment, as they deserve. It is time for us to widen our circle of compassion and follow Spain’s lead in granting legal rights to apes.
