Welfare officers from international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary have reported an improvement in the welfare of donkeys and other equines at this year’s Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria, which finished earlier this week.

Stanwood is right near where we live in Seattle and, sadly, home to Pigs Peace Animal Sanctuary which rescues all kinds of animals. horses destined to die and be butchered in one of Canada’s equine slaughterhouses for human consumption abroad.” I can only imagine how they feel. I've received so many donation requests from "People Helping Horses" that I finally decided to send a donation. I've never been around horses much, but a friend of mine who has 3 horses and 2 burros (!) told me that horse groups have been hit particularly hard with the economy. Definitely one I want to follow.

Danny and Ben were rescued on April 27 by the Ohio SPCA after receiving a complaint about malnourished horses. They were brought to the Ohio SPCA Farm Sanctuary to recover physically and heal spiritually. Little Ben was so sick that he had to be transported to Woodland Run Equine Veterinary Center.

This means that once an animal arrives at the sanctuary they become a permanent resident, and will remain until such time that they pass away, be that a matter of days, weeks, months or years. To date we have welcomed more than 175 animals to the sanctuary, and there have been more than 80 who have peacefully passed away while in our care.&#.

But what we love most about Best Friends is that they don’t just help dogs, they help birds, cats, horses, and more! The blessing takes place in a special area of the sanctuary called Angel’s Rest. Buster is the mascot for Strut Your Mutt , an amazing event where dog lovers come together to raise money for Best Friends.

I was thinking about the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary calendar of rescued animals photographed by Deb Durant that's on my refrigerator. Most had no idea that there were sanctuaries that include animals we use for food, though they don't flinch at the idea that I have a friend who spends her Saturdays (or is it Sundays now?)
