The first stop was Wolongshan, a place known more for its giant pandas than its birds. I do not mind pandas much as long as they do not stand in front of interesting birds, blocking my view, so this was not really an obstacle. The first two photos were actually taken right from my hotel room.

US Groups Fight to Save Polar Bear Hunts

Supposedly, environmentalists and animal rights activists have "unfairly made the polar bear into 'the panda bear of North America.'" Now that the species is listed in the US as "threatened," hunters can't import the dead body parts (aka hunting "trophies") in from Canada. insert crying baby picture here.)

A paper on breeding of the species was actually researched right here at Wawushan. The Great Parrotbill recently unsuccessfully petitioned to be renamed to Giant Parrotbill, citing the panda example as proof of the benefits of having this name. While Giant Pandas are celebrated in today’s China, this was not always the case.

The Golden Pheasant

I guess in China, there is always money for research related to Giant Pandas. One such study looked at the attention the pandas pay to different species, using eye-tracking technology. It turns out the pandas are not very interested in Golden Pheasants despite their position among the top 10 most beautiful bird species.
