A Field Guide to the Birds of Mongolia by Dorj Ganbold and Chris Smith (2019) offers more than 500 species in one neat edition. While at the National University of Mongolia, he conducted research on illustrating birds in the field, including at bird-ringing stations. Dorj Ganbold is an ornithologist and professional illustrator.

In one stretch of rocky outcropping, a group of Ground Woodpeckers foraged along boulders searching for ants and as their name suggests, they forage on the ground in sparsely vegetated country. I have seen documentaries of yak herders in Mongolia, but I never thought I would see something similar with my own eyes.

Godlewski’s Bunting is an attractive bunting species with a rather broad distribution in Russia, Mongolia, China, and other countries. Not sure how I (or the bird itself) feel about the bird being named after a bird collector, though. Admittedly, the issue is more serious for Przevalski’s Pinktail. .”

BirdingAsia has a report on the first Rosy Pipit seen in Mongolia. The best female strategy seems to be to mate with as many of the males as possible, as this means more help in feeding the chicks by all the potential fathers (I guess the fathers do not have easy access to paternity tests). Being wet seems to help, though.

By plumage and distribution, they can very roughly be divided into 2 groups (probably not reflecting taxonomic relations): One group inhabits central Asia ( personata ), the mountains of southern Asia ( alboides ), central East Asia ( leucopsis ) and the Pacific coast from the southern half of Kamchatka to Japan ( lugens ).
