We saw dozens of small, brown birds hopping in and out of the vegetation like Sickle-winged Chat , Mountain Pipit , various lark species, a Southern Bald Ibis that only a mother could love, and fewer raptors like Bearded Vultures and Cape Griffon.

I am a groundhog. That is, I was born on the oddest of holidays, Groundhog Day, which means that this weekend is my birthday weekend. For the rest of the day we would mostly be heading back west, towards New York City, as we birded Long Island like our lives depended on a decent species count.
