On Monday, December 2, 2008, the Year of the Gorilla was launched by the UN and Monaco's Prince Albert. backed Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals said they hoped to raise half a million euros ($630,000) for projects aimed at fighting the animals' biggest threats. That's all they think they can raise?

The Amusing Case of the Gulf Breeze Zoo Canada Geese

The first time I visited the 30 acre enclosure, I walked the raised boardwalk over the space with eyes wide. On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass. Just beyond a fence, a pair of rhino adults and one baby munched contentedly on hay.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. Zoo patrons were shocked to see Barika, a western lowland gorilla, holding a knife and apparently pointing it at another primate in the enclosure. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties.
