They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

Early starts are the rule when monitoring endagered species in Mkuze Game Reserve, in South Africa, but there’s a particular urgency to this morning’s start. It was Falakhe, who had dragged himself twenty kilometers on two broken legs past Hyaenas, Lions, Leopards and jackals. Support Wildlife ACT in supporting them.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. Madikwe may have been farmland once upon a time but these days it has been fully restored as an astonishing game reserve. Leopards are also awesome and I saw two at Madikwe. I did find my Yellow-throated Sandgrouse at Madikwe! But they are very cute!

Lango Camp deck overlooking Lango Baï, by Congo Conservation Company The forests of the Congo Basin contain more than a 1,000 species of birds, together with 400 species of mammals, including Okapi, Hippos, Leopards, Chimpanzees and Bonobos. Game viewing on foot, by 4×4 or by motorboat.

As Bill Oddie noticed in his foreword to ‘Wild Sri Lanka’ (2nd edition) by Gehan De Silva Wijeyeratne, this island paradise is probably the only country in the world where almost all books on wildlife were authored by a single person.
