Another danger to the species comes from lead poisoning as they eat the carcasses of deer killed by hunters ( source ). Bonus photos: One to annoy those people who do not like human items in bird photos … … and one showing an embarrassing moment for an eagle, crashing into the ice.

These two islands are about halfway between the tip of South Africa and Antarctica in the Subantarctic Indian Ocean, have had relatively few human visitors, and are primarily inhabited with some of the rarest seabirds in the world and a smaller number of mammals. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and and seabirders.

As Marra and Santella note, tens of millions of people have “a deep bond and connection with cats” precisely because they’re a little bit wild, among a multitude of other reasons including soft fur, cuddliness, and playfulness. There is evidence that toxoplasma leads, in humans, to an elevated risk of mental illness and depression.

While I'm not a fan of using animal hearts for transplants, I'm far more sympathetic to that than to simply using their parts for human vanity consumption. Despite that, a Quebec-based seal fur company has begun championing Pibarot's hypothesis, seeing the research as a buoy for Canada's beleaguered seal harvest.

Over 3 million pairs of Antarctic Fur Seals breed on South Georgia, saved from near extinction by fur hunters. Others, my favorites, show the species within the habitat: breaching Humpback Whales, a Reindeer confronting a King Penguin (below), an elevated view of a beach full of breeding Fur Seals.

” Contemporary environmentalism arrived too late to prevent the passenger pigeon’s demise due to market hunters, but the two phenomena share a historical connection. Of course, by now most people know they have been slaughtered by hunters for their ivory. Some people actually don’t consider human beings as animals.
