Florida, Of Thee I Sing

Even in the Brazilian Amazon, I’ve never seen this many whistling ducks together–there were sixty at a manmade lake behind the Brevard Community College near Titusville, Florida. My birder’s brain struggled mightily to reconcile the odd shapes in the sky with any known species, but their call brought it all back.

A friend was in Florida, and as people in Florida are wont to do, he taunted me with pictures of some good birds that I am not currently looking at. So maybe some reckless member of this really quite attractive and fascinating species actually did do something untoward to some long-forgotten birder. The investigation continues.

Returning to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge
