It spends its life flying or floating on ocean water, sometimes staying up to ten years between landfalls; earning it the additional moniker “Wideawake Tern.” Perhaps it’s fitting that Sooty should choose to nest with all its family on one of the most inaccessible national parks (for humans) in the world. On a visit yesterday after work to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn I happened across this female Red-breasted Merganser that I initially thought was in the midst of struggling to swallow a nasty chunk of some kind of marine life. If it is, say, the innards of some kind of fish does that make it less of a priority to help the bird?

Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. These nutrient-rich currents provide sustenance for a variety of marine-life, including the many thousand of seabirds that call this place home. The island is half a mile wide and about three-quarters of a mile in length.
