It spends its life flying or floating on ocean water, sometimes staying up to ten years between landfalls; earning it the additional moniker “Wideawake Tern.” Perhaps it’s fitting that Sooty should choose to nest with all its family on one of the most inaccessible national parks (for humans) in the world. Red-breasted Merganser with a Mouthful

On a visit yesterday after work to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn I happened across this female Red-breasted Merganser that I initially thought was in the midst of struggling to swallow a nasty chunk of some kind of marine life. If it is, say, the innards of some kind of fish does that make it less of a priority to help the bird?
