In short, the accepted view used to be that a small breeding population of Egyptian Vultures inhabited Southern Africa, but has vanished facing the spread of towns, roads and farms. Up to now there have been almost 80 confirmed electrocuted Egyptian Vultures in that area.

But all this changed in the early 1940s with the establishment of vegetable muck farms on the lake’s north shore. The healthy marshes that filtered the lake’s incoming water were drained to make room for the muck farms. American Bitterns are common around the lake fringes in winter.
