There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

Back when I was a kid growing up in California’s San Mateo County in the 60s and 70s, my family would occasionally drive 45 minutes west and south to Bean Hollow State Beach. and my first member of the auk/puffin family. The day was rounded out by many, many Brown Pelicans , two Black Oystercatchers (lifer!),

So you can imagine my great pleasure when it worked out for me to stay in California for two extra days at the end of our family vacation out west. Brown Pelicans cared not for my taint. Hordes of Brown Pelicans , Heermann’s Gulls , and Western Gulls made it clear we were on the west coast. Anyway, back to the boat.
