I birded Uganda, which was my first time on the continent of Africa. I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California. I saw nine species of kingfisher while I was in Uganda.

There are certain families that I habitually fail to encounter when opportunities arise. One family I have consistently dipped on are the Burhinidae, known variously as dikkops, thick-knees or stone-curlews. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills.
