Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. Gray-necked Picathartes foraging in leaf-litter on the forest floor in Korup National Park, Cameroon.

Falakhe’s Story

At first we were concerned that another dog had been injured, perhaps hit by one of the hunter’s cars (who were watching the pack as well). Like other social animals, his family connections were keeping him alive, as his family was feeding him. Falakhe is still alive, as is the dominant male in his litter.

My imagination conjured a frog desperate to return to his home and family, but trapped in a surreal world of artificially-cold air, very little dirt, ostensibly no available water, and precious few bugs to eat. I followed his call, but so did Emily The Hunter. Lucky for Kermie, she was otherwise occupied.
