According to the HBW entry for this species, it “has been claimed that loss of native mammals after European settlement created shortage of nesting material, explaining this species’ penchant for taking hair from humans.” ” (HBW).

As most people know cats, both feral and domestic, have a pretty big impact on wild birds and other wildlife, and the effect of mammals is particularly profound in New Zealand. Even wiping out a majority of mammals from the third biggest island is a challenge, and not just logistically.

For the moment I’ll stick with the split babbler families although I may relump the laughingthrushes, ground and tree babblers per Molye et al (2012). I list mammals as well, at the end, where I have been able to identify them. Species are listed by family according to the order eBird spits them out to me in.
