For nearly a hundred years, after the eggers, meat-hunters, plume-hunters, and a human-influenced gull population boom, puffins were absent from the island. They were reintroduced to Eastern Egg Rock starting in 1973 , with over a thousand young transported from Canada over several years.

Falconers must always keep their birds somewhat wild so if they get separated or the bird flies off never to return, it can still survive on it’s own without human intervention. When you see a falconer transporting their bird or walking with a group, the bird might be in a dark crate or hooded. Many get their birds from breeders.
