And now that I've read Animal Equality and begun Speciesism , I think I know why. Dunayer devotes a chapter each to the language used in hunting, zoos, "marine parks," vivisection and "animal agriculture." I'd rather extend moral consideration to something that can't suffer than fail to extend it to someone who can" (154).

There's a vague sense that perhaps he cares about the dogs or thinks that what he does to them might present an ethical dilemma, but the overwhelming feeling is that it's all worth it. He writes as if what he used to do--and what he defends--is morally justifiable on its face, and it's just the details that might be questionable.
