In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. Irv Bell's farm is a family farm. It's also a factory farm. And all of those are implicit in "farm."

On "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals"

And it gently tells the story of why we shouldn't eat factory farmed animals. The significant problem with this book is that the solution to the problems posed (which begin with "On factory farms. ") could easily be some Farm Forward-endorsed small operation where many of the horrors of factory farming don't exist.

An Affront to the Idea of Family

The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned. And they certainly wouldn't hurt anybody; that's what those big factory farms do that aren't owned by families.

as I was running this morning, I couldn't help wonder what the difference is between his book and The Compassionate Carnivore and the myriad others written by people who despise factory farming, yet claim to love animals (and of course love their "meat," and find a way to get it while not feeling bad about it).

On the animal front, there is definitely a message that factory farming is unsustainable, and that subsistence farming is and was preferable; there is a vague if-we-did-it-differently-it-might-be-sustainable message. , not deeply of course, but sufficiently so you get a clear picture that is impossible to deny. But that's me.
