But, the anticipation of everyone else in the group was contagious, and when California birder Lori Conrad looked out the window of the plane as we started our descent and screamed, “Elephants! There are elephants down there!”

During the early 1990s, rumours surrounding the occurrence of a few Egyptian Geese in far north-western Germany emerged, the result of an increasing and spreading Dutch feral population. They did not feature in any of our field guides, and were confined to many a traveler’s Afrotropical dreams. Just a peculiarity.
