This bird, of the Turdus family, can be found on the western slopes of Ecuador and Colombia. This was a very interesting experience with quick breaths, speeding heartbeats, and a few tense moments of not being able to photograph the bird due to fog.

One reason that I can think of for subjecting myself to such a torturous experience is if I am going birdwatching. I had just ended my ten-day birding adventure in Ecuador (which is a story for another time) when I decided, since I had an amazing time, to prolong my trip a bit longer before heading back to Europe. Ah, what the heck!

For me there are few experiences more satisfying than releasing a fish that has put up a great fight. And every so often the experience is heightened by witnessing a challenging species doing something extraordinary, giving me a unique perspective into its shy life that is, for the most part, hidden from human eyes.

My first birding trip outside Ecuador was fantastic and added nearly 200 new birds to my list. This was an amazing experience which confirmed the continued destruction of the forest caused by the insatiable expansionism of humans. My wife and I spent two weeks in Brazil birding the Atlantic Forest and The Pantanal.

In 2009, I traveled from New York City to the tropical rainforest of Ecuador. I looked up most of Kricher’s biography on the Internet because his bio on the back book cover is very brief and I wanted to know a bit more about the education and experience he brought to this uncommon book. is remarkable.

Like all talented travel writers, Dunn is adept at drawing us into his experiences. There is a photo of him caring for a White-chinned Sapphire in the book, the only human pictured in Dunn’s 16-page collection of hummingbird photographs, and it is inspiring. I had hoped for more.

I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!
