On Wednesday this week we had a very close encounter with a Wedge-tailed Eagle on the edge of the road. The Wedge-tailed Eagle only had a meal on its mind and I only had photographs and the health and welfare of a lizard on my mind.

And so, on behalf of the breed, animals went unneutered (an animal welfare faux pas) and individuals who couldn’t be tamed were allowed to roam feral on their owners’ farms (an environmentalist no-no) and their potential as meat animals was taste-tested and they were even cross-bred to impart their hardy but docile genes to other, more common types.

Now, Baxter is heavily developed, with big box stores and all, and Brainard is a welfare town. We also did not see a drone get knocked out of the sky by an eagle. The part of the road that went through Brainard was replaced, not long ago, with a road that ran through an undeveloped town called Baxter. And Huxley.
