Winter Wanderland

We admired the Bison in the frozen fields and saw a juvenile Golden Eagle which was both beautiful and a lifer for my hosts. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed. I ticked off 9 lifers.

Visitors on the Range

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge.

Over the Mountain

Things were quiet at first as I headed upwards, until I startled two Mule Deer. Whatever species they were considered these days, they were clearly planning to propagate more. The spectacular views of the valley also offered me looks at a passing Common Raven , Red-tailed Hawk , and an adult Bald Eagle. It just feels this steep.
