Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. And wow, what a trip we had! million hectares in 2007.

Lacking, as I do, a birding reputation that would make people part with cash for my time I’ll have to go for the rarity hunters and put together an itinerary of highlights that can’t be missed. In Cantebury, where there are moa there might be Haast’s Eagles. I can’t lose.
