Goat Island, off New Zealand’s Northland, was an amazing diving location without any birds. The dive was a gentle one, as dive goes, with a lot of kelp to get under to hunt for interesting fish, lobsters, sponges and rays. But that is actually by the by, because diving is its own reward. Hiwihiwi ( Chironemus marmoratus ).

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. A Konso village perched atop a terraced hill.

This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere. Here we find two of the most interesting members of the family, the Crested Moa , unique of course for the shaggy crest on its head, and the mountain-goat-like Upland Moa.
