Count Your Chickens (In the Florida Keys)

When we eat eggs we eat chicken eggs almost exclusively. Feral Chickens number in the thousands in Key West alone and that population has not been dented even as hundreds of birds are trapped and removed – in fact, in 2011 0ver 1,500 were captured and trucked to an organic farm in central Florida. Americans love chicken.

Back in the truck, working on our back spasms, we drove a hundred yards south, then turned east, passing a farm house which had feeders out front, and where a flock of Bohemian Waxwings had been reported that same morning.

Remotest Endemic Birds

Its numbers are declining rapidly due to feral cats and this duck is currently listed as vulnerable. Like its distant island neighbor to the north, Tristan can only be reached by ship and its population of 264 people rely on farming, fishing and supplies from fishing vessels that arrive from South Africa about 8 times a year.
