Early starts are the rule when monitoring endagered species in Mkuze Game Reserve, in South Africa, but there’s a particular urgency to this morning’s start. We hadn’t been on the road long before a shout went out that a dog had been seen, and we quickly turned back, and there was my first Painted Wolf in Mkuze.

This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Tianmashan bonus mammal: a Raccoon Dog – though it looks a lot like a raccoon, it is actually more closely related to foxes than to raccoons. And it does not even live in reeds. The White’s Thrush will keep pretending to be a reptile.

Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Yellow-billed Stork. One of them sported a pair of Standard-winged Nightjar feathers in his headband.

Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish. And at the same time, Woolly-necked Storks have modified their behavior to survive even in urban gardens where they scrounge for dog food on back porches!

My post last week where I defended game hunting as a conservation tool has, unaccountably, encountered a certain amount of push back. Who would have thought that a post defending hunting game in general would have not been universally acclaimed? And embattled minority should be protected.

This Lion should not be shot, as it is a protected reserve that forbids shooting. The answer should be obvious to anyone familiar with wildfowl hunting in the US and the film Jerry McGuire – money.
