On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. My definition of violence would begin with the physical harm of living beings. I think most would agree with that one, although there is the question of psychological harm, and activists are all over the map with that. Why all the quotation marks?
