A few days before Christmas, I vibrated in the passenger seat of my mother’s car as she turned towards Deering Oaks Park in Portland. Deering Oaks Park is not small, its grassy slopes and tall trees spreading around a small pond near downtown. But the hawk remained, continuing its diet of squirrels and varmints.
