It may be for the courts to decide whether cruelty to animals can pass off as free speech, but we must also rethink these important ideas as a culture. First, I do think people can either be desensitized to the rampant cruelty depicted in Earthlings, or so terrified of what might happen if they let it affect them that they simply shut down. Do you use the idea of "evil" in your thinking and processing of animal rights and veganism? Is evil an excuse we make for people?

My doctor says my tremendous health and strength are due to my being a vegan. These farmers work long hours moving animals from pasture to pasture and often struggle with a paucity of meat-processing infrastructure suitable to the needs of small-scale producers. I still have the same six-pack stomach I had in the Marines.

Causing an animal to suffer for no good reason is cruel, and our ordinary commonsense morality tells us in no uncertain terms that cruelty is wrong. It is certainly likely that a similar phenomenon would occur if vegan vegetarianism became a widespread movement in the U.S. One suspects that the SPCA and the American Humane Society have done more to stop cruelty to animals than vegetarians ever could. But my eating meat is not such a necessary condition for cruelty to animals.
