If that means volunteering at a dog rescue or giving money to PETA, all while eating and using animals, at least you’re doing something.

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. After time in the Marines, I veered strongly away from eating creatures, thinking of their suffering. The debeaking of hens and other routine cruelties of egg production are seldom put before the public. Kristof (column, April 9): Thank you for this inspiring and enlightening article.

Today it is a different situation, i learned from then about respecting animals and my life has been devoted to ending their suffering and torment. Need reminding why cruelty to animals is wrong? That letter makes me want to raise a boy, just so I can see the impulse toward destruction and cruelty.
