The Cook Strait can be windy and choppy as all get out, and I’ve heard one horror story of a boat crossing in storm seas, spending five hours trying to thread the needle and get into the Marlborough Sounds, give up, and then head back to Wellington. Fortunately the crossing was lovely for me!

I am hoping that there is an appreciative audience here, willing to learn a little about down-under birds and wildlife. We were also lucky enough to see a beautiful pair of Sacred Kingfishers hunting along the coastal edge. I’m also going to write about myself and my birding life – even if it involves leaving the Sunshine Coast!

Now that the colony is off limits for hunting, the population has grown and the village is benefitting tremendously from entry and guide fees, and a school is being built courtesy of conservation funds. The supply of legal timber cannot come close towards meeting the demand generated by the growing economy.
