In case you didn’t know, yes, there is an indigenous peacock living in Africa, the Congo Peafowl. And apart from local people, primate researchers sometimes spot it, but it is a species seen by fewer than ten living birders. Some are incredibly rare and hard to find. “Wild Rwanda – Where to watch birds, primates, and other wildlife”

At the time of writing, Rwanda had 25 endemic birds (nowadays 27 to 29, depending on the taxonomy), but among the 26 mentioned and described is also the one that is not – yet – among them: the Congo Bay-owl , not confirmed for the country and recorded only in the guerilla infested montane forests of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Do birds avoid predators because of culture?

My research in the Congo supports this idea. I spent a lot of time with Efe Pygmy hunters in the deep forest, and I spent a certain amount of time either entirely alone or with only one other researcher, this or that American. Clearly, more research is needed! Being bad at avoiding predators takes one generation.
