I am still tired from the long drive, but it was great to play with the very best toys for birders, to be able to share experiences and to ask the factory staff all sorts of silly questions. In comparison with ELs, EL 10s and NL 12s have the same field of view, as well as EL 8s and NL 10s. impressive for Central Europe.

Falconry – Bloodsport or Alternative Form of Birding?

During the filming of this production, I got to experience “dirt hawking&#. Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). But what really strikes me is the smell – fresh, clean and without comparison.

Do birds avoid predators because of culture?

Plasticity in humans is probably modulated primarily through experience and enculturation. As I’ve noted elsewhere, it was really Darwin’s experiences on the Falklands that first congealed many of his evolutionary insights. Presumably the humans keep away the predators.

The New Stokes Field Guides to Birds, Eastern Region & Western Region: A Review of Two Books

The species descriptions are arranged according to the American Ornithologists Union (AOU) order current for 2012, with the order of individual species occasionally adjusted for the comparisons described above. For me, using T he New Stokes Field Guide to Birds, Western Region was a happy experience.

What It’s Like to Be a Bird: A Review of the New Sibley Book

Look at the Swallow page shown in the beginning of this review: there is a comparison of Barn Swallow and Cliff Swallow nests; silhouettes of a Barn Swallow in flight; a skeleton of a Barn Swallow, bones stronger and stiffer than humans but not, surprisingly, heavier. More narrative, more dense, maybe a little less fun.
