Not only are they killed in cruel ways, but it is well documented that they are raised in ways that cause them great discomfort and agony. Meat-packing companies might encourage, for example, an increased dog population to take up the slack.

Wherever companies profit from cruelty, you can rest assured that they will try to hide that cruelty from consumers, because cruelty makes a rather poor PR statement. Each semester when I teach Contemporary Moral Issues, on the first day of class I begin with a survey. But is it really? Not according to my students.
