The system was intended as a hunter-centric model, both guided by and benefitting consumptive interests. Given that few hunters actually consume coyotes, wolves, cougars, and except for a few individuals, even bears, it is obviously a “waste” of wildlife to shoot or trap these animals just for “fun” 2.

Living in Colorado, I was practically next door neighbors to a Spix’s Macaw, “Presley,” who was discovered in an Evergreen living room—the only known Spix’s Macaw in the United States—and who was repatriated to Brazil before I even knew he existed. Ellen Kessler, like many birders the world over, would like to see a Spix’s Macaw.

However, a place like Colorado offers mild winters and there is usually open water scattered around the Front Range. Now, Common Mergansers are common breeders here on the Front Range and Colorado mountain streams, so we are used to seeing them regularly. This is where they are truly effective and amazing hunters.
