After 14 hours of flight / 20 h spent travelling to reach Costa Rica from Eastern Europe, I landed in San Jose in the rain. It did go a bit slower than I was hoping for, however, I came to Costa Rica with 957, and started to collect my birds like an Acorn Woodpecker collects its nuts. It was close to 5 a.m.,

October Global Big Day in Costa Rica- an eBird Trip Report

Global Big Day has become an annual collective event in May that encourages thousands of people to watch birds on the same date. This can be a long drive from San Jose, especially with road construction and slow and seemingly eternal truck traffic, but once you get there, the voyage is worth it.

Caribbean Lowland Birding at Ara Ambigua Lodge, Costa Rica

Although a lot of beautiful rainforest was replaced by bananas, cattle pasture, and other ag-lands many years ago, at least we can still enjoy great birding at a number of sites, most of which are easily accessible including Sarapiqui, the most visited site in the lowlands north of San Jose.
