Diving has taken me to places like Belize, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Egypt, places that coincidentally are fun to bird. It was one that myself and a collection of friends, all of whom where marine biologists, rocked up to one New Year’s Eve in order to dive the following day. Kina, or Sea Urchin. I was a diver before I was a birder.

And, I’ve passed through the Ancient Egypt exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum, where the Ibis is featured on pottery fragments, many times. It includes stunning photographs by Tipling of eagle hunters (as in Kazakhs who hunt with eagles), Stellar Sea Eagles in Hokkaido, Japan, and Black Kites at the dump near New Delhi, India.

Birding St Lucia, South Africa

Apparently, while in Egypt waiting for a boat to return to Germany he collected specimens of the bird which is now named after him. The Southern Banded Snake-Eagle is listed as Near Threatened as there is only an estimated global population of 1000–3000 individuals. Never happens to me when I am waiting for a bus.
