Shanghai is located on the coast of the East China Sea and lies right on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. A former World Wildlife reserve in Nanhui was simply turned into agricultural land. Other areas in Lingang are starting to be covered with factories (Tesla) and residential buildings. And yet it is.

Reed Parrotbill – an unofficial city bird of Shanghai

In 2016, the Shanghai Wildlife Protection Management Station started the search for one, though progress has been slow. The Reed Parrotbill is in some ways a much more interesting bird as it is near-endemic in China and Near Threatened. I would like to introduce two candidates, a bulbul and a parrotbill.

The 701 Long-eared Owl of Kikinda

You may have read about them in the Wall Street Journal , the BBC Wildlife Magazine , or perhaps watched them on BBC, who filmed them here twice, for the Planet Earth II in 2015 and for the One Planet in 2018. Have you heard of a small town in Serbia graced by the presence of its 700 communally roosting Long-eared Owls ?
