You wouldn't expect Pollan or Oprah to deliver a vegan or animal rights message and they didn't. Alicia Silverstone was on the show as a spokesperson for the health benefits and other benefits of veganism. Alicia (laughing): Well, I'd have to see the cows and the chickens. And a similar pouncing has come from some vegans.

I want to talk about why we shouldn't be using animals and that it's infinitely easier to be a vegan than it was 20 years ago. If you believe your dog has a right to a life free of torture and slaughter for no reason, then you really ought to think about extending that right to mice, rats, chickens and fish.

But if you're on the outside, and you're hostile to the idea of respecting the natural lives of sentient nonhumans and you see them only as resources to be managed, might you have a similar idea? Now, I know you're saying: That's not what animal rights is.
