Africa’s endangered species

The stunning head plumes of the Gray Crowned-Crane make it attractive to bird collectors and zoos; illegal collecting of wild birds is one of the reasons why this species is now considered Endangered. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.

One of the first examples I ever encountered was in the books of Gerald Durrell, the famous conservationist who was an early pioneer of the roles of zoos in conservation. It is without question an unpleasant way to die for any animal.

Should is not a Solution

The way things should be is a very powerful motivating factor in human lives. The tigers keep wandering out of their reserve and taking cattle from nearby villages, taking what little these already poor people have. Perhaps it would be better to move the tigers to that bigger reserve, or maybe a zoo.

For some reason, even though there are Mandarin Ducks in zoos throughout New York City, this escapee has become an internationally known tourist attraction, even heading the New York Times list of “Five Times the Internet Was Actually Fun in 2018.” I easily spotted the Whooping Cranes in the cattle field. Well, not really a bird.
