One of this species’ many peculiarities is that it has a digestive system unique amongst birds: Hoatzins use bacterial fermentation in the front part of the gut to break down the vegetable material they consume, much as cattle and other ruminants do. While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. albiventris ) and fish eating Pied Kingfishers ( Ceryle rudis ). Among 60 or so heron species in the world this is the only one using this peculiar fishing technique.

One of the species he called out, Red-masked Parakeet , was present in numbers and nesting at the location. Then he pointed out a Least Tern that came in to hunt for fish on the pond as if I would be assuaged with another bird that has “Least” in its name! Too bad they’re not countable Carlos!
