The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. Millions die each year that are hit by cars, crash into windows, wind turbine blades or at the paws of domestic cats. On top of being illegal to capture and sell birds in the country, it is also immoral. It is quite simple.

The lake consists of a large body of open water, a belt of tall yellow grass (where a big orange cat can blend and disappear if it chooses so) and, all around it, thick forests of predominantly teak, interspersed with thickets of bamboo. As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals.

It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. If it is in immediate danger from cats, try and shoo it away from the cat and lock the cat up indoors (preferably for good) or at least while the bird learns to fly. Birds of prey look cool, but they can’t count.
