In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. but did experiment on mice and guinea pigs. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). It was a jarring moment.

I got my first pets, mice and guinea pigs, when I was 8. I didn’t get my first dog until I was 20, but since then I have been making up for lost time. Today I own 40 outdoor dogs and two more who live indoors! Start with easier pets – Many people don’t want to start with the responsibility of a dog or cat.

Some of us forget that dogs are mere animals, and that animal mistreatment is as American as Apple iPods. In university labs nationwide, scientists inflict spinal-cord injuries on dogs and cats, inject rats with carcinogens, test dangerous drugs on monkeys, and do all kinds of evil things to guinea pigs in the name of scientific research.
