And though the satellite transmitter let Machi be tracked it did not protect it from the hunters’ guns. Suggestions to start a campaign to protect shorebirds from hunters as they migrate through the Caribbean would be appreciated in the comments. I’m extremely grateful to Paul for taking the initiative in raising awareness of this NWR campaign. I’ve long advocated for a habitat stamp strickly for birders as some of us don’t want to be labeled as hunters. Hat-tip to Stella. They may weigh in to make their voices heard… or not. Wicked, right?

If you wrote to Tennessee in the 10,000 Birds campaign this winter, you can cut and paste your letter, changing “Tennessee&# to “Kentucky.&# Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.
