Their populations, plus those of other species that ‘wore’ the coveted long, colorful feathers used for women’s fashionable hats, were being dangerously depleted by hunters intent on feeding the millinery industry. Ironically, only the women of one of these campaigns, the suffragette movement, have been recognized and honored.

Ironically, the bird in the photograph served as the model for the bird in the lithograph; it was killed, skinned, preserved and stuffed a few days after the photograph was taken. Fuller’s astonishment at locating this “grail of extinct-bird photograph hunters” is contagious. These are not the words of a scientist.
