An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The Northern California-based In Defense of Animals called for the Department of Agriculture, which does inspections of zoos, to investigate Umoya's death.

The 6 th edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America , for example, includes “extinct” and “probably extinct” species in a chapter, mixed in with accidentals.) By way of an example take the Western Gulls that I studied on the Farallon Islands in California. One of the first examples I ever encountered was in the books of Gerald Durrell, the famous conservationist who was an early pioneer of the roles of zoos in conservation. This is a very serious business here in New Zealand.

So, while this fact does not need to concern us, if we are thinking about ethical principles, for example based on rational arguments leading to deontological ethics, that changes when we are talking about how to move society towards this ethical ideal. The campaign should not demand huge changes in society. What do you think?
