The eagles do not breed on Hokkaido, spending only a few winter months there – so if you want to see courtship displays as described in here , you have to go further North a bit later in the year. But marrying a widow and thus getting access to scientific information was not the only remarkable event in his life.

Come September most of the summer seabird people had left, but there were a small number of seabirds still breeding and so I stayed behind for three years to continue their monitoring and do the migrant landbird surveys, as well as the Great White Shark surveys. Under the surface we could sea Oceanic Sunfish and Blue Sharks.
