Black Drongos must be breeding here – this juvenile was terrorizing his parents with constant calls for food. Presumably, the parents of black drongo chicks sometimes meet with Red-billed Starlings to sympathize with each other about the challenges of raising chicks these days. Black-tailed Gulls , I think.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. Incidents include a hippo who died in transport from Denver and a Turkmenian markhor, a species of wild goat, hung itself at the zoo after becoming trapped by a rope. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds.

A pair has been nesting by the roadside for some years, but they are not so predictable outside of the breeding season. There is no transport inside the park and all travel must be on foot. Look out for the Howler Monkeys too.
